The Modi government rolled out the much talked about Goods and Services Tax (GST) on the midnight of June 30 The GST Council has fixed the tax rates for 1,211 items, keeping a majority of these in the 18% slab.

GST was first announced in 2000 by the then government. Seventeen years later it is now a reality with the date for implementation set for July 1, 2017.
